Chapter 14 - THE BLOODLINE WARRosa shoved my mother behind the concrete cabinet.

Dante returned fire through the storage-unit doorway.
Agent Ward pulled me toward the rear wall.
“There’s no exit.”
“There is now,” Thomas said.
He fired three shots into a weakened section of drywall and kicked through it.
The wall opened into the adjacent unit.
We crawled through as bullets struck the cabinet behind us.
My ribs felt like broken glass grinding beneath my skin, but I kept moving.
Thomas led us through three connected units before reaching an exterior maintenance corridor.
Liam remained on the forgotten video call.
“Emma?” his voice shouted from the dropped phone.
I turned back.
Dante grabbed it from the floor and followed.
“You brought my brother?” I gasped.
“Technically.”
We reached the alley behind the facility.
Federal vehicles blocked both exits.
Vittorio’s men were trapped.
The gunfight ended quickly after that.
Four attackers surrendered.
Two escaped.
One carried legal documents declaring me mentally incompetent.
The papers had been prepared three months earlier.
Before I met Dante.
Before I collapsed.
Vittorio had planned to expose my paternity, portray me as unstable, seize control of my inheritance, and eliminate Dante through criminal prosecution or death.
Jake’s abuse had served another purpose.
Photographs of my injuries could be presented as evidence of self-harm.
My malnutrition could be called addiction.
My miscarriage could be used to portray me as emotionally unstable.
He had not only beaten me.
He had been building a legal version of me that could never be believed.
Detective Ruiz spread the documents across a hospital conference table.
“They have statements from two supposed psychiatrists,” she said. “One claims you were diagnosed with paranoid delusions.”
“I’ve never seen a psychiatrist.”
“Both doctors received payments from a shell company connected to Vittorio.”
Dante read the affidavit.
“Marco signed this.”
My chest tightened.
The statement claimed I had stolen medication from restaurant guests and frequently spoken to people who were not present.
“Marco was threatened,” I said.
“He still signed it.”
“So did half the people who worked for your family.”
Dante looked at me.
The truth landed.
Fear had purchased entire institutions for the Morettis.
Marco was not innocent.
But he was not unique.
“What happens to the inheritance?” I asked.
Dante’s attorney, Evelyn Price, adjusted her glasses.
“You may renounce it after probate establishes your identity.”
“Good.”
“But renouncing immediately could transfer your shares to Vittorio.”
“Not good.”
“You could place them in an independent trust.”
“For how long?”
“Until Vittorio is convicted or legally excluded.”
“So I have to become part of the empire to stop him from owning it?”
“Temporarily.”
I looked at Dante.
“Did you know?”
“Not until today.”
“Do you want my shares?”
“No.”
“You answered too quickly.”
“Because the answer is simple.”
Nothing involving the Morettis was simple.
My mother slept in the adjoining room. Thomas sat beside her.
Liam had been returned to secure custody but granted a hearing within forty-eight hours.
Jake refused to cooperate.
Vittorio remained outside the federal perimeter.
That evening, Dante took me to Moretti Tower.
The top floors contained offices with panoramic views of Chicago. The lower floors housed legal companies: shipping, construction, hotels, food distribution.
Respectable businesses built above blood.
Dante showed me the boardroom.
“Tomorrow, I will announce that Salvatore had another child.”
“I’m not standing in front of reporters.”
“You do not need to.”
“Vittorio will call me unstable.”
“Then we provide medical documentation disproving his claims.”
“He’ll reveal how I was conceived.”
Dante’s face darkened.
“We can seal those records.”
“He’ll leak them.”
“Yes.”
My mother’s worst experience would become public gossip.
Headlines.
Comments.
Strangers debating whether she lied.
I felt sick.
“There’s another option,” I said.
“What?”
“I reveal it first.”
Dante stared at me.
“No.”
“You don’t decide.”
“I know. But I am asking you to consider what public exposure will cost.”
“I’ve spent years hiding what Jake did because I thought shame belonged to me.”
“This is not your shame.”
“Exactly.”
The next morning, I stood inside the Moretti boardroom.
Cameras faced the podium.
Reporters filled every seat.
Dante stood several feet behind me.
Not beside me.
Not in front.
Where I had asked him to stand.
I looked into the cameras.
“My name is Emma Foster. Until this week, I believed Thomas Foster was my biological father. I have learned that I was conceived when Salvatore Moretti assaulted my mother during a federal investigation.”
The room erupted.
Questions flew.
Dante raised one hand.
Silence returned gradually.
I continued.
“My mother survived. She protected me. Thomas Foster raised me as his child and sacrificed his life with us because Vittorio Moretti threatened our family.”
A reporter shouted, “Are you claiming ownership of the Moretti companies?”
“I am claiming nothing except the right to tell my own story.”
“What about your mental health?”
“I have been examined by independent physicians. Documents suggesting otherwise were fabricated by people working for Vittorio Moretti.”
“Are you involved romantically with Dante Moretti?”
The question struck like a slap.
Dante’s face became lethal.
I answered before he could.
“Dante and I were strangers when he helped me after I collapsed. We later learned we share a biological father. Any suggestion beyond that is false and designed to humiliate two people who had no knowledge of their connection.”
The room quieted.
Another reporter asked, “What will you do with your inheritance?”
“I will place every share into a trust dedicated to dismantling criminal influence within Moretti businesses and compensating victims harmed by those operations.”
Dante looked at me.
We had not discussed the victim fund.
But he nodded.
The press conference ended.
Within an hour, my story was everywhere.
Some called me brave.
Some called me a liar.
Some analyzed my bruises as if my body were public evidence.
Then a video appeared online.
It showed me in Jake’s apartment, crying and throwing a glass after the miscarriage.
The recording had been edited to make it seem as though I attacked him.
Jake had filmed me without my knowledge.
The caption read:
UNSTABLE MORETTI HEIRESS THREATENS BOYFRIEND.
Millions of people watched.
My truth began drowning beneath his lie.
Then another video was uploaded.
This one showed Jake striking me in the same room moments earlier.
The unedited footage.
A message appeared beneath it.
